Hippasus was a Greek philosopher from Metapontum, who lived around 530 to 450 BC and was an early follower of Pythagoras. He is often credited with the discovery of irrational numbers, a revelation that reportedly led to his drowning as punishment by the Pythagorean community, since this contradicted the Pythagorean belief that all numbers could be expressed as ratios of integers.
